San Antonio, TX 5/01/24 - On 1 April 2024, Cadet First Lieutenant Isabelle Rodriguez earned the Civil Air Patrol’s (CAP) Amelia Earhart Award and was promoted to the rank of Cadet Captain, entering the final phase of Civil Air Patrol’s Cadet Program. Her accomplishments stem from her original reasons for joining, the challenges and obstacles she faced to reach this point in her cadet career, and how that affected her journey as a leader of character.
Cadet Rodriguez joined Civil Air Patrol in November 2019 to take advantage of CAP's opportunities to become a pilot and possibly join the United States Air Force. Additionally, she wished for a challenge: an opportunity to serve something greater than herself and to learn to serve others.
A challenge that she encountered early in her journey is one we are all familiar with: the COVID-19 pandemic. The resulting lockdowns caused almost everything to be done online, making it difficult for her to stay motivated and remain in the program. Ultimately, she maintained her motivation to stay due to her desire to grow as a leader and person, demonstrating her incredible perseverance.
Upon reaching the Cadet Non-Commissioned Officer ranks in July of 2021, she faced a larger challenge of getting out of her shell and being in charge of other cadets. This process was one that she had been working on since joining, gaining experience being a peer leader and through her attendance at a summer encampment the same year. When she was promoted to Cadet Staff Sergeant, she was well on her way to leading others.
Her internal leadership journey was marked by success, as she earned the Brigadier General Billy Mitchell Award and was promoted to Cadet Second Lieutenant in May 2023.
Her leadership purview also changed as she found herself developing long-term plans for her squadron and mentoring others on their journey to becoming cadet officers. With her transition into the final phase of the cadet program, Cadet Rodriguez is now honing skills as an executive-level leader and is very excited about the challenges and opportunities she will discover in the future.
